The Elevated Railroad (The el)
Battery Park
The el originated in Battery Park and took passengers to midtown Manhattan.
The Manhattan Railway Company's elevated railroad originated in Battery Park, steps from the Syrian neighborhood. Traveling north, one line followed Ninth Avenue and the other, Sixth Avenue. Syrian peddlers got on at Battery Place station and traveled uptown to the upscale neighborhoods of Midtown Manhattan. It was dangerous, noisy, dirty, and blocked out the sun, but it was the first rapid transit in New York. It ceased operating in 1940.
