Syrians lived primarily on the eastern (right-hand) side of the street in the odd-numbered residences. The western side was home to their Irish, German, and Slavic neighbors. Stepping off the boat, the new immigrants would have seen shops and stores sporting signs in Arabic reminding them of home.
