St. Joseph's Maronite Chapel
81 Washington Street
Before they had their own chapel, Maronites worshipped at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church on Barclay Street.
On the arrival of their priest, Peter Korkemas, in 1890, they began to look for a place of their own. But it was not until 1894 that they were able to convert the upstairs rooms of 81 Washington Street into a chapel. By all accounts simple and unadorned, the chapel served the large Maronite population until they founded a church in Brooklyn.
